Thonotosassa Community Profile Thonotosassa, Hillsborough County, Florida History According to Wikipedia, The name Thonotosassa is derived from the Seminole-Creek words thlonto and sasse, meaning the place was a source of valuable flint. When Fort Brooke in present day Tampa was founded in 1824, a road was built connecting it and Fort King in Ocala which ran northwest of Lake Thonotosassa. In 1893, a line of the South Florida Railroad connected Thonotosassa to Tampa, Wikipedia's report said. This, one of Florida's first state parks, is divided by the Hillsborough River. Fort Foster is a replica of an 1837 fort from the Second Seminole War. The river provides opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking; a canoe/kayak launch is available on the river. Canoes can be rented at the park´s concession, which also provides food, beverages, picnic supplies, and souvenirs. Hikers can walk over seven miles along four nature trails. The Wetlands Restoration Trail accommodates bicyclists and hikers. When the weather calls for it, visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim in the park´s ADA accessible swimming pool. The park offers full-facility camping and a youth/group tent campground. A primitive campsite is available via foot trail; reservations are recommended. Lake Thonotosassa This 819-acre lake is located off Thonotosassa Road, west of MacIntosh. It is accessible through a fish camp and a public boat ramp. Lake Thonotosassa is extremely fertile. Bass fishing is good in this Fish Management Area during the spring. Sunshine bass are stocked regularly and are caught during the winter and spring. Busch Gardens, Tampa, Florida This is extreme entertainment! Located about 8.1 miles from Thonotosassa, and just over an hour west of Orlando near Florida's beautiful Gulf Coast, Busch Gardens takes you to the edge of Africa. Here you will see amazing animals, take a safari and ride coasters like you've never ridden before. Take a breather once in awhile and enjoy the live entertainment.
